How My Students Taught Me about Online Teaching

Session Description

I started teaching online before the pandemic, and I wanted to know if I made a successful transition from in-person teaching. I used Chickering and Gamson’s Seven Principles For Good Practice in Undergraduate Education for that assessment, and I empowered my students to be the assessors. Canvas surveys made it easy to conduct the assessment, analyze the results, and compare from semester to semester. The same can likely be done in other learning management systems, and even Google Forms could be used if necessary.

In this session, I’ll share the method I used to collect feedback from students and what they told me about their online learning experience and my skills as an online teacher. I’ll also discuss how student feedback informs my course design and how this method can be shared with instructional faculty at any level.
