Designing Learning Experiences for Filipino Faculty: Using Multiple Data for Reflections and Improved Practice

Session Description

For two years, a Philippine higher education institution contracted for professional development services to support the faculty in managing the pandemic's effect on the various facets of teaching and learning activities, and the first year of implementation engaged the participating faculty and the U.S.-based instructional designer/facilitator in an online format. Despite internet connectivity challenges and adjustment to online pedagogy, two cohorts of first-year participants provided positive feedback on the learning experience.

During the second year, the faculty development activities shifted to a face-to-format delivery since the instructional designer/facilitator had a short-term relocation to the Philippines. However, technology integration issues related to access and usage of a learning management system posed new challenges. Still, two cohorts of second-year participants expressed appreciation for the value gained from the learning experience.

The presentation will report the feedback received from the fifth cohort of faculty members after their online participation last Fall 2023. The session will describe internal and external factors that influenced the completion of various activities. In addition, the session will discuss experiences that contributed to personal growth and professional development. Further, the session will describe participants' experiences (positive or negative) in completing the various activities (i.e., topics, course outcomes, learning objectives, schedule, consultation). Finally, the session will report on participants' perceived benefits or values gained from the professional development experience.

At the end, the presentation will discuss suggestions or recommendations for making the professional development program more responsive to the identified needs related to faculty teaching and student learning.
