Multi-Discipline Implementation of XR: An Instructional Technology Perspective

Session Description

XR technology is a growing tool in higher education. This growth has led to Instructional Technology teams to understand and explore the best implementation of XR for their university and faculty. For the academic year of 2023/2024 the Instructional Technology team assisted a cohort of 15 faculty from across the University of Redlands implement XR in their courses. Using Oculus 2 headsets, free or low-cost apps, and VictoryXR professors implemented XR in both undergraduate and graduate classes. In the courses, students of various XR experiences participated in activities that ranged from passive videos to active experiences to XR content creation. Throughout the implementation of the project the Instructional Technology team learned how best to manage the devices, what preparation activities would be needed for course implementation, health and safety concerns, and student and faculty perceptions of the effectiveness of XR in Higher Education. This poster session will discuss the project and present some of the findings from pilot, including recommendations for future XR deployment.
